Ingredients

  • 1 cup of dried beans
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as required

Equipment

  • A pressure cooker
  • A frying pan
  • A spoon
  • A knife
  • A cutting board

Method

  1. Soak the beans overnight or for at least 6 hours in water.
  2. Drain the water and keep the beans aside.
  3. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds.
  4. Once the cumin seeds splutter, add chopped onions and green chilies.
  5. Saute until the onions turn translucent.
  6. Add ginger-garlic paste and saute for a minute.
  7. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
  8. Add all the spice powders and salt. Mix well.
  9. Add the soaked beans and mix well.
  10. Add enough water to cover the beans completely.
  11. Cover the pressure cooker with the lid and cook for around 20-25 minutes or until the beans are soft and tender.
  12. Remove the lid and cook for a couple of minutes to let the gravy thicken.
  13. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice.

Notes

This recipe can also be made without a pressure cooker. In that case, soak the beans for a longer time and cook them in a pot until they are soft and tender.
