Method

  1. Wash the rice and soak it in water for 20 minutes.
  2. Drain the water and cook the rice in a pressure cooker with 2 cups of water. Once the rice is cooked, spread it out on a plate to cool.
  3. Soak the tamarind in warm water for 10 minutes. Squeeze the pulp out of the tamarind and keep it aside.
  4. Heat oil in a frying pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  5. Add cumin seeds, chana dal, urad dal, dry red chilies, asafoetida, turmeric powder, and curry leaves.
  6. Saute for a minute or two until the dals turn golden brown.
  7. Add tamarind pulp to the pan and cook for 5 minutes until the raw smell of tamarind goes away.
  8. Add salt and mix well.
  9. Once the tamarind mixture cools down, add it to the cooked rice and mix well.
  10. Add roasted peanuts and mix well.
  11. Tamarind rice is ready to serve.

  • You can adjust the spiciness of the dish by adding more or fewer red chilies.
