Ingredients

  • 1 cup of uncooked rice
  • 1/4 cup of tamarind pulp
  • 1/4 cup of peanuts

  • 1/2 teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of red chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of asafoetida
  • 2 tablespoons of oil
  • Salt to taste

Equipment

  • A heavy bottom pan
  • A mixing bowl
  • A spatula
  • A grinder

Method

  1. Cook the rice and let it cool.
  2. In a pan, roast the peanuts and sesame seeds until they turn golden brown.
  3. Grind the roasted peanuts and sesame seeds along with grated coconut into a coarse powder.
  4. In another pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and asafoetida. Let them splutter.
  5. Add the tamarind pulp, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt to the pan and mix well.
  6. Add the ground powder to the pan and mix well.
  7. Add the cooked rice to the pan and mix well until the rice is coated with the tamarind mixture.
  8. Cover the pan with a lid and simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  9. Turn off the heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
  10. Serve hot with papad or raita.

Notes

  • If you don't have tamarind pulp, you can soak a small piece of tamarind in water for a few minutes and extract the pulp.
  • You can adjust the amount of red chili powder based on your spice preference.
  • This dish can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days.
