Description

Asian steak and rice dishes are a perfect combination of savory flavors and textures. The steak is usually marinated in soy sauce, ginger, garlic, and other Asian spices, giving it a rich umami flavor. The rice is cooked to perfection, fluffy and light, with a subtle taste that complements the steak. These dishes are easy to make and perfect for a quick and healthy weeknight dinner.

Prep Time

The preparation time for this dish is about 15-20 minutes. This includes the time it takes to marinate the steak and cook the rice.

Cook Time

The cook time for this dish is about 20-25 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of sirloin steak, sliced thinly
  • 1/4 cup of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • 2 tablespoons of sesame oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of grated ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 cup of rice
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)
  • Chopped green onions, for garnish (optional)

Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Large skillet or wok
  • Rice cooker or pot with lid
  • Tongs
  • Spatula

Method

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  2. Add the sliced steak to the bowl and toss to coat. Let marinate for at least 15 minutes, or up to 1 hour in the fridge.
  3. Cook the rice according to package instructions or in a rice cooker.
  4. Heat a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the vegetable oil and swirl to coat the pan.
  5. Using tongs, remove the steak from the marinade and add it to the hot pan. Reserve the marinade.
  6. Cook the steak for 2-3 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked to your desired level of doneness.
  7. Remove the steak from the pan and set aside on a plate.
  8. Reduce the heat to medium and add the reserved marinade to the pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.
  9. Return the steak to the pan and toss to coat in the sauce.
  10. Serve the steak over the rice, garnished with sesame seeds and chopped green onions (if using).

Notes

  • If you don't have a rice cooker, you can cook the rice in a pot on the stove. Simply bring the water to a boil, add the rice, cover, and simmer for about 18-20 minutes, or until the water is absorbed and the rice is fluffy.
  • If you prefer a spicier dish, you can add more red pepper flakes or even some sriracha to the marinade or sauce.
  • This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled to feed a larger crowd.

Recipe Tips

  • Make sure to slice the steak thinly so it cooks quickly and evenly.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan when cooking the steak, or it will steam instead of getting a nice sear.
  • Let the steak rest for a few minutes before slicing to allow the juices to redistribute and keep the meat tender.
  • You can use any type of rice you prefer, such as white, brown, or jasmine.
  • You can also add some vegetables to this dish, such as sliced bell peppers, onions, or broccoli.
