- 1/2 cup toor dal
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1/2 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, beans, peas, etc.)
- 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
- 2 tablespoons sambar powder
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 3 cups water
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2-3 dried red chilies
- A few curry leaves

The following equipment is required to make sambar rice:- A pressure cooker
- A pan
- A ladle
- A spatula
Method
Follow these steps to make sambar rice:- Wash the rice and dal in water and soak them for 10-15 minutes.
- Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, dried red chilies, and curry leaves.
- Once the mustard seeds start spluttering, add chopped onions and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
- Add chopped tomatoes and sauté for another 2-3 minutes.
- Add mixed vegetables and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
- Add tamarind paste, sambar powder, turmeric powder, and salt to taste.
- Sauté for 2-3 minutes and add 3 cups of water.
- Drain the soaked rice and dal and add them to the pressure cooker.
- Mix well and close the lid of the pressure cooker.
- Cook on high flame for 3 whistles.
- Turn off the flame and let the pressure release naturally.
- Open the lid of the pressure cooker and mix well.
- Serve hot with papad and pickle.
