Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
  • 2 tablespoons sambar powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2-3 dried red chilies
  • A few curry leaves

  • A pressure cooker
  • A pan
  • A ladle

Method

Follow these steps to make sambar rice:
  1. Wash the rice and dal in water and soak them for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, dried red chilies, and curry leaves.
  3. Once the mustard seeds start spluttering, add chopped onions and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes and sauté for another 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add mixed vegetables and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  6. Add tamarind paste, sambar powder, turmeric powder, and salt to taste.
  7. Sauté for 2-3 minutes and add 3 cups of water.
  8. Drain the soaked rice and dal and add them to the pressure cooker.
  9. Mix well and close the lid of the pressure cooker.
  10. Cook on high flame for 3 whistles.
  11. Turn off the flame and let the pressure release naturally.
  12. Open the lid of the pressure cooker and mix well.
  13. Serve hot with papad and pickle.

Notes

To make this dish more flavorful, you can add a tablespoon of ghee at the end.
